A 17-year-old girl defied a Tom Green County district judge this afternoon, failing to bring her infant child to court and refusing to answer questions about where the child is.

The girl is a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a former resident of the YFZ Ranch in Schleicher County. She had been ordered by 51st District Judge Barbara Walther to appear with her mother and her 5-month-old daughter so the baby could be genetically tested to determine paternity.

The baby was not present when Walther convened a hearing today on a request by the state child Protective Services Agency to do DNA tests on the infant. CPS Attorney John Dolezal told the court the girl had refused to bring the baby.

Under questioning by Dolezal, the 17-year-old said the baby was traveling. When Dolezal asked where the child was traveling to, the girl replied, “I refuse to answer that question.”
